Level 3 Award in Coaching

Coaching is an essential skill for effective leaders and managers. It is fundamental to developing employees and creating a high performance culture and enthusiastic committed people.

These programmes will equip participants with coaching skills which can be used immediately in the context of day-to-day business.

They will enable participants to:

  • Understand and apply coaching theory.
  • Understand good practice in workplace coaching.
  • Plan, organise, record and evaluate workplace coaching sessions.
  • Use a variety of interpersonal communication strategies when coaching others in the workplace.
  • Adapt their coaching style to meet the needs of their coachees.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the coaching programme.

Learning outcomes:

On completion of the programmes participants will be able to:

  • Explain the role, responsibilities, characteristics and behaviours of an effective workplace coach.
  • Effectively apply the key skills of an effective coach (questioning, active listening, reflecting, giving and receiving feedback, observation and interpretation of body language).
  • Use coaching models to enable others to clarify their professional development goals, find their own solutions, develop their own skills and celebrate their achievements.
  • Use coaching to enhance individual and team performance.
  • Use the Performance Wheel to help learners clarify their development goals and monitor their progress.
  • Understand learning styles and barriers to effective coaching.
  • Adapt their coaching style to meet the needs and learning style of the individual.
  • Monitor, assess and record learner’s progress towards their goals.
  • Help learners to assess and record their own progress towards their goals.
  • Monitor and review their own performance as a workplace coach.
  • Confidently, plan and organise effective workplace coaching sessions.
  • Confidently plan a workplace coaching programme.
  • Confidently apply coaching techniques in the workplace.

Programme outline:

Our flexible, blended learning approach allows participants to study at a pace that suits them and fits around their commitments. The programme, on average, takes between 6 to 12 weeks and consists of:

  • Three days of workshops.
  • Practice sessions within the workplace.
  • Regular telephone/email/skype support.
  • One-to-one tutorial with programme leader.
  • Reading reviews.
  • Practical work-based assignments.
  • Assessment and feedback.
  • Completion of a coaching log (Extended Coaching Log for the Certificate) and work-based assignments leading to the ILM Level 3 Award in Coaching or ILM Level 3 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring.

Day One: Understanding good practice in workplace coaching.

  • Introduction to workplace coaching.
  • Coaching models, definitions, theory and application.
  • Ensuring good practice in coaching.
  • Practical coaching sessions: Coaching, being coached and providing feedback.
  • Coaching tools to maximise professional development and enhance performance.

Day Two: Undertaking coaching in the workplace.

  • Review of learning.
  • Becoming a workplace coach.
  • Understanding learning styles and barriers to effective workplace coaching.
  • Applying the key communication, interpersonal and influencing skills to maximise the coaching sessions and relationship.
  • Building rapport and effective coaching relationships.
  • Using coaching to enhance performance and raise awareness in the unaware coach.
  • Practical coaching sessions: Coaching, being coached and providing feedback.

Day Three: Reflecting on workplace coaching skills

  • Review of learning and interim coaching practice.
  • Sharing of best practice stories, successes and barriers faced.
  • Organising, planning and recording workplace coaching.
  • Practical coaching sessions: Coaching, being coached and providing feedback.
  • Assessing own strengths and weaknesses as a workplace coach.
  • Reviewing own performance as a workplace coach and identifying areas for improvement.

Note:
Award in Coaching
To achieve the Level 3 Award in Coaching, candidates are required to satisfactorily complete the three units as listed above.

Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring

To achieve the Level 3 Certificate in Coaching and Mentoring, candidates are required to satisfactorily complete an additional unit:

  • 8577-302: Undertaking an extended period of coaching in the workplace.

Support:

Candidates will receive:

  • ongoing advice, guidance and tutorial support for assessment.
  • email/telephone/skype support as required.
  • ongoing coaching supervision as required.
